2026.08.0620:22:20UTC+00TSX Slips from Record High

The S&P/TSX Composite Index slipped to 36,136 on Thursday, pulling back from a record high as investors weighed uncertainty over a potential US-Iran peace agreement and digested another wave of corporate earnings. Reports suggested that Iran intends to bar US and Israeli vessels from the Strait of Hormuz and to demand compensation from countries it deems hostile before allowing their passage. Rising wholesale fuel prices pushed bond yields higher. Financials ended mixed: Brookfield fell 1.1% and Scotiabank dipped 0.2%, while RBC and TD Bank inched up. Celestica tumbled 13% after pricing a common share offering at a steep discount to the prior session’s close. Lundin Mining lost nearly 3% even as it posted stronger second-quarter revenue. In contrast, Canadian Natural advanced 1.6% after topping second-quarter profit expectations. Shopify gained 2.2% after at least six brokerages raised their price targets. WPM (+1.9%) and Sun Life Financial (+0.8%) were scheduled to report earnings after the close.
